In my 'canon' playthrough the events happen shortly after Rannoch, after getting both the Geth and Quarians to stand down and broker peace - it's literally the highest point in the story and a good place to have that lighter story that has all your available companions.After retaking the Normandy I go back and forth between playing the main game and going back to the Citadel when new characters show up. Then we have the party just before taking Kronos Station at the start of the endgame.
